We’ve had our surprises and performances that didn’t impress us one bit. But a position that’s caught my eye in perspective these previous two weeks is wide receiver. In this issue of Fantasy in Five, I’ll analyze five wide receivers that have either played beyond expectations or are a complete mess.

1. Danny Amendola- With the St. Louis Rams proclaimed one of the worst teams in the league, there wasn’t supposed to be any production from the offensive side that was worthy of a fantasy football roster spot (minus Steven Jackson). With a spotty offensive line and limited playmakers, the once named “Best Show on Turf” became the “Best Joke on Turf.”

But then came along a 26-year-old by the name of Danny Amendola. Bradford has become comfortable enough to consistently throw to the Texas Tech alum. In Week 2 against the Washington Redskins, he caught 15 passes for 160 yards and a touchdown after scoring seven points last week for fantasy owners.

Unlike Kevin Ogletree, Amendola is a reliant waiver pickup who plays on offense with nobody else to rely on. The only scare here is the small amount of touchdowns in his career. Then again, this could be the year he hits his ceiling of potential.

2. Donnie Avery- In order to win a league, you have to possess some type of luck (pun intended). Whether it involves waiver pickups or trading your top draft selections for depth, nobody can admit they win a league off pure talent.

The good news for everyone is Avery can bring you that luck (pun once again intended). Most rookie quarterbacks have a fetish to find that one go-to receiver that whole first season. You can tell Luck’s fond of Avery, who caught nine passes for 111 yards against the Minnesota Vikings in Week 2, while scoring a touchdown against the Chicago Bears last week.

I won’t be surprised if Reggie Wayne eats up some of those throws, but Avery can be a reliable backup. The man’s been consistent with his numbers since coming out of Houston, but finally gets a shot to show his talents on a rebuilding Colts squad. All signs point positive.

3. Wes Welker- Welker could be a legitimate example of a receiver who benefits from the system he plays in. Then again, so far he hasn’t made much of an impact.

After only catching three passes for 14 yards and no score the opening week, Welker did have five receptions for 95 yards against the Arizona Cardinals. The New England Patriots have converted their offense into a two tight end system, and the emergence of Stevan Ridley hasn’t helped Welker blossom into the cliche main target of Tom Brady.

To be fair, Aaron Hernandez just got sidelined for an ankle injury, so there’s a chance this will eventually become a fluke. Welker’s still getting targeted a decent amount, but his usual touchdowns aren’t there just yet. I wouldn’t give up on him to this point.

4. Jordy Nelson- After last season came to a close, most experts were high on Nelson. I mean when you have over 1,263 receiving yards and 15 touchdowns in 16 games, why wouldn’t you be?

Fast forward to the dawn of Week 3 and Nelson can’t seem to hold on to a football. Sure, his numbers are pretty solid, but the catches he’s been dropping have cost him and his owners extra points. If this was last season, Nelson would be averaging near 14 points a week to this point.

I wouldn’t pull the alarm on him just yet, but we were warned to not fully buy his 2011 season. Nelson will be covered more since defenses have to game-plan for his presence now. He’s obviously a starter, but not a number one for your team.

5. Ramses Barden- I think the New York Giants may have found their 2012 version of Victor Cruz. Barden wasn’t expected to play much, but with a team banged up at so many positions, he was given a shot.

Talk about giving a good first impression. After finally getting some decent playing time, he lit up the Carolina Panthers secondary for nine catches and 138 yards. Given that the Panthers’ secondaries is one of the weakest in the league, that’s still impressive for someone who hasn’t played more than eight games in a season.

As of now, I’m not sure where Barden will be on this Giants roster. But he made sure to express his 6’6 frame and speed at the right time. I’d pick him up as a last roster spot, as he could explode with Eli Manning passing him the ball.

With the Colts not re-signing Freddie Keihao and Tyjaun Hagler, should they start bringing in new ones in the draft? Absolutely not! Why bring James Laurenitas like NFL Network said in their mock draft when they can bring back this important linebacker: Cato June?

And now that Reggie Wayne might be the number one target, it will be hard time rolling the offense because everyone will be ganging up on Reggie Wayne and Manning has to throw to Roy Hall, Pierre Garcon, or Anthony Gonzalez (see Breaking Down the Colts Pt. 3) and it will be tough for them to get the ball because they really aren’t masters of the playbook like Harrison and Wayne.

And then speaking of Harrison…why can’t we bring him back? This guy is a legend to the Colts. No one is interested in the soon-to-be 37-year-old wide receiver who still has some left in the tank.

The last year when the Joseph Addai struggled, Dominic Rhodes helped out big time. Rhodes is in free agency and only a few teams have spread interest in him. But he hasn’t been signed by those teams, did he? No way. We should bring Rhodes back. Rhodes is a great player. If you don’t believe, take a look for yourself.

And Bryan Brackney, I am sorry, but I highly disagree of you saying that if Rhodes gets signed by the Colts, Mike Hart can easily beat him out for the second-string back in the depth chart. Rhodes is the X-Factor to the team.

D-Rhodes has been very good with the Colts. Every year he gets better and better. Now that I have covered Rhodes, what about the other two Colts’ amazing players? Marvin Harrison…..does that ring a bell anybody? Of course.

Marvin’s lowest totals were in 2007 and 2008. 2007 wasn’t really that bad because Harrison missed much of the season. But 2008, it was the fall of the Marvin Harrison era. It looked like it. After Harrison declined the deal the Colts could offer him, Harrison thought he could have an easy path in free agency?

So, how’s that going for you? Not that good, is it? A lot of people say that Harrison will re-join his teammate from Syracuse, Donovan McNabb. I thought it would be a perfect fit. Then I saw an article on Bleacher Report, can’t remember what it was called, but he was saying that Harrison can be on the PATRIOTS and it would be a no-brainer that the Pats will win it all.

I agree.

But nothing has happened. I think we should bring Harrison back. Just ask Ryan Michael. His article pretty much explained it, for sure. I would love to see Harrison back. When I was watching NFL Network’s Top 10: Passing Combinations or whatever it was called, the number one was another no-brainer: Manning-to-Harrison.

One dude said that “this passing trend will be here for a long time.” Well it’s gone, but not really. Then he said that “everyone is going to miss this one. People will be talking about this trend for a long time.” I hope people still are. The Colts should really consider in bringing back Harrison.

There is no point wasting their first-round draft pick on Hakeem Nicks or something like that. The Colts should that in probably the third or fourth round. What receiver is good in the third or fourth round? Ramses Barden. I explained it well about it. But we should draft Barden with Harrison still on the team.

Harrison has been a legend. If he can stay for about one-to-about-three more years, I think it would be great. He could be very close close, if not break, Jerry Rice’s records. I would really love to see that happen. We need Harrison back. Let’s see what happens. You never know, he could retire?

But let’s hope he doesn’t. But there is another person who surely won’t retire now. He was a great player to the Colts D. Ladies and gentleman, please applause for the Colts’ next contestant….CATO JUNE!

Cato June has been amazing with the Colts. After being a solid linebacker for the Buccaneers, he is in free agency. According to the Colts Corner, the Texans have spread huge interest in June. But why should the Colts let June fall into the Texans’ hands? Colts got to steal it away.

June can be a decent linebacker for the Colts, now that he is aging a bit. But this is a tough decision, though. The Colts still have Clint Session and Gary Brackett. They might Phillip Wheeler as the next starting linebacker, but it could be a huge risk.

I think June should come back, maybe. Why? Well, with Hagler and Keihao might going to the Texans and no chance of the Colts bringing them back, they should bring June back. He could fill in for Hagler’s shoes. June can become a great player.

June has lost some of his potential, though. His highest number of tackles with the Bucs was 69! But according to the stats, he only started 14 games in both of those years. His last 100-tackle-season was in 2006 with the Colts! And it was 142 tackles, his career-high.

Besides his rookie year, all of his other years with the Colts have been 100-tackle-seasons. With pretty much 500 total tackles, he can bring it up. He’s only 29 and probably has at least seven-to-eight years left of him. Should the Colts take this risk?

Fans, you decide. Should we bring back Dominic Rhodes, Marvin Harrison, and Cato June? Comment below and let’s hear your opinion. Bring them out! Don’t be afraid to share you thoughts. It looks good to hear them.

Decide now!
