Montreal Hires New Head Coach
The Montreal Canadiens signed Jacques Martin as their head coach today. Martin, 56, is leaving his previous job as a GM of the Florida Panthers. He is replacing Canadiens GM Bob Gainey, who took over after Guy Carbonneau was fired on March 9th. His contract runs through the 2011-2012 season. New York Islanders center Mike Sillinger will miss the remainder of the 2008-2009 NHL season. The 37-year-old from Regina, Saskatchewan underwent hip resurfacing surgery in New York on Monday.
