In front of a sold-out crowd of 29,533 at Canad Inns Stadium, the Saskatchewan Roughriders annihilated the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in a rematch of the Banjo Bowl. Saskatchewan scored 31 points off seven Winnipeg turnovers and went on to win by a score of 55 to 10. The Bombers turned the ball over four consecutive times in the second quarter and eight during the entire course of the game.

Roughriders kicker Luca Congi was 6-of-6 on field goal attempts, and punter Jamie Boreham registered two singles on a punt and a kickoff.

Saskatchewan quarterback Darian Durant was 18-of-36 passing for 225 yards, throwing a touchdown strike to Wes Cates. Cates and Durant combined for three rushing touchdowns to lift Saskatchewan to Win #6 of the season.

“That was just a good old-fashion whipping, I guess you could say,” said Cates, who scored a total of three touchdowns for the Roughriders.

Jason Armstead added a 34-yard touchdown pass to Andy Fantuz in the 3rd quarter. It gave the Roughriders a 38-7 lead.

Winnipeg’s Michael Bishop was 9-of-21 passing for just 98 yards. The Blue Bombers fell to 3-7 on the season.

With a 25-16 victory over the Toronto Argonauts on Friday, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers are inching closer to a playoff spot. Bombers running back Joe Smith had a great game, carrying the ball 12 times for 101 yards, finding the Toronto goal area with 34 seconds left in the game.

Smith’s teammate Fred Reid had an impressive day as well, running the ball 14 times for 106 yards. Winnipeg outran Toronto 222 yards to 77. With just three games left to play, Winnipeg’s running game has put the team four points ahead of Toronto.

Bombers kicker Alexis Serna kicked the game-winning 34-yard field goal for Winnipeg with 7:11 left in the 4th quarter.

The 27,268 fans at Canad Inns Stadium witnessed the Winnipeg squad improve their record to 6-9 while Toronto fell to 4-11. If Winnipeg wins at least one game or Toronto loses one game, Winnipeg can earn their ticket to the playoffs.

In addition, the Edmonton Eskimos have clinched the playoffs as well, which means that all four teams in the West Division will make the playoffs. If Edmonton were to finish last in the West Division, they would play a crossover playoff game against an Eastern opponent.

Thanks to a Fred Reid 4-yard touchdown run with 1:14 left in the game, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers have defeated the Edmonton Eskimos 30 to 23 at Canad Inns Stadium in Winnipeg, Manitoba. With that victory, the Bombers have won three straight games after having started the season 2-8. As for Edmonton, they have lost their second straight game and fell to 7-6 on the season.

Reid, who carried the ball 16 times for 93 yards, said “It’s most definitely a statement game. We’re more confident right now as a unit, and we’re coming out and playing hard every week.”

Winnipeg scored their other touchdowns from a Milt Stegall 31-yard touchdown pass, a 73-yard touchdown pass to Arjei Franklin (first touchdown of his three-year career), and an 84-yard punt return by Jason Armstead.

Bombers kicker Alexis Serna missed all three of his field goal attempts from 33, 40, and 30 yards. He only scored two singles out of hose field goals and was boed loudly for his horrid performance.

The crowd of 29,794 witnessed Arjei Franklin getting mobbed by his Bomber teammates after scoring his first career touchdown. Franklin said, “I think if anyone were to look at the fact that we beat a good team like Edmonton, you know, maybe they’ll start taking us a little more seriously.

“But, to be honest, we don’t really even care how they take us. They can think that we’re a joke coming into their stadium, or they can think that we’re a team to be reckoned with.

“Either way, we’re going to play as hard as we can to get that W.”

The Bombers and Eskimos will play again next Saturday in Edmonton.

Kevin Glenn completed 18 of 26 passes for 268 yards and the two touchdowns to Stegall and Franklin, but threw one pass to the Edmonton defense. As for Eskimos QB Ricky Ray, he went 36-of-43 for 434 yards and two touchdowns, but threw one interception.
