Behind a touchdown by 285-pound defensive end Ventrell Jenkins, the Kentucky Wildcats have defeated the East Carolina Pirates in the Autozone Liberty Bowl by a score of 25 to 19.

With just over three minutes left in regulation, Myron Pryor forced a fumble by East Carolina’s Norman Whitley; the ball was picked up by Jenkins, who stiff-armed East Carolina quarterback Patrick Pinkney before diving into the endzone for the winning touchdown. However, it appeared that Jenkins’ knee made contact with the turf as soon as he picked up the football, which would have negated the touchdown. Nevertheless, upon further review, the call on the field was confirmed.

Strangely enough, Kentucky had scored a similar touchdown earlier in the drive when Patrick Pinkney fumbled the ball, which was recovered by Kentucky. Although the Wildcats scored on that play, the call on the field was reversed when the referees determined that Pinkney’s knee was down before losing possession of the ball.

Patrick Pinkney would finish the game completing 18 of 36 passes for 297 yards, throwing one touchdown to Darryl Freeney. Brandon Simmons ran the ball ten times for 44 yards, finding the Wildcats’ endzone once.

Kentucky’s Mike Hartline went 19-of-31 for 204 yards, throwing one touchdown to Kyrus Lanxter. However, he threw an interception to East Carolina’s J.J. Milbrook.
