CFL Recap: July 14, 2010

by Derek Johnson on Thursday, July 15th, 2010

Toronto Argonauts 27 Calgary Stampeders 24

58 minutes had elapsed, and the Argonauts had not scored even one touchdown…that is, until Jeff Johnson scored on a one-yard run to give the Argonauts a 25-24 lead over the Stampeders; Cleo Lemon found Chad Owens in the end zone on the two-point convert to extend Toronto’s lead to three points at 27-24. On the ensuing series, the Stampeders turned the ball over on downs.

The Argos scored the other 19 points off four Grant Shaw field goals, a Grant Shaw single, and three safeties (the CFL record for most safeties in a game is four).

Toronto quarterback Cleo Lemon completed 18 of 37 passes for 187 yards, throwing a pass to Calgary’s Brandon Browner. Running back Cory Boyd ran the ball twenty times for 142 yards.

Calgary’s Henry Burris went 20-of-40 passing for 207 yards and three touchdowns: one to Nik Lewis, one to Romby Bryant, and one to Deon Murphy. However, Burris threw four interceptions: two to Kevin Eiben, one to Willie Pile, and one to Evan McCollough; it was the first time Burris threw four interceptions in a game since 2000, and he nearly threw a 5th on Calgary’s last drive.

Stampeders kicker Rob Maver kicked a 21-yard field goal and made three converts in the game.

Both teams now stand at 2-1 on the season.
