Report: Chiefs Ink Thomas Jones

by Jon Alba on Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

ESPN’s Adam Schefter is reporting that the Kansas City Chiefs have signed former New York Jets running back Thomas Jones to a two-year/$5 million deal. Jones can earn an extra half million with performance incentives.

-The Chiefs signing a running back comes as little surprise to the NFL news wire, as they released former star Larry Johnson this past season. They did receive some pretty surprising performances from Jamaal Charles, but have opted for a veteran instead.

-It had been reported that former Steelers back Willie Parker was in negotiations for the job, but he obviously will have to look elsewhere.

-Jones, 31, is coming off of his fifth-consecutive 1000-yard rushing season. He also punched in 14 touchdowns for the playoff-streaking Jets in 2009. The team had released him a few weeks ago in order to escape certain contract clauses, and were hoping to sign him back.

Thomas, who also played with the Bears in Super Bowl XLI, brings experience and leadership to a team that is in desperate need of both categories. Keep it with SFC for more NFL news!
