Report: Mike Holmgren Agrees To Join Browns
NFL Network is reporting that former Packers and Seahawks head coach Mike Holmgren has agreed to join the Cleveland Browns’ front office, likely as the head of football operations.
“We are pleased to announce that Mike Holmgren has greed to join the Cleveland Browns. We will spend the rest of the week finalizing details of the agreement and will make a formal announcement next week,” said Browns owner Randy Lerner.
Holmgren, who retired from coaching following last season, had stated last week he was highly interested in the position with the Browns. Despite the franchise’s recent struggle, he made it clear that there was a lot of potential to be found with a team that has not made the playoffs since 2002.
One thing that has been brought into question is the status of head coach Eric Mangini. The former Jets head coach signed a three-year deal this past off-season, but has come under scrutiny for his coaching practices. Even with a win on Sunday against the Chiefs, Mangini’s job security is expected to be in jeopardy. Though no comment has been made, this speculation will only grow as the season concludes.
Mike Holmgren coached the Green Bay Packers to a Super Bowl XXXI victory over the New England Patriots. In addition, he earned a championship appearance in his tenure with Seattle as he guided them to Super Bowl XL.
It is unknown at this time as to when he will assume his duties as head of the Browns.
