San Diego Chargers linebacker Shawne Merriman was arrested on Sunday morning. Merriman was accused of choking and restraining his girlfriend, Tila Tequila, after she tried to leave his home in Poway, California.
Tequila, whose real name is Tila Nguyen, signed a citizen’s arrest warrant and charged Merriman with battery and false imprisonment.
“It’s disappointing to hear about the issue involving Shawne Merriman,” said Chargers general manager A.J. Smith. “We’ll continue to monitor the situation and let the legal process run its course.”
Merriman was the 12th overall pick in the 2005 NFL Draft out of the University of Maryland and registered 39.5 sacks in his first three years. He was getting back into shape after missing most of last season with a knee injury.
Tila Tequila is best known for “A Shot at Love with Tila Tequila”, a bisexual dating show that ran for two seasons on MTV. She has also modeled for Playboy and other men’s magazines.
