What’s worse than losing your season opener against BYU? How about losing your season opener against BYU AND your star quarterback? That’s what happened to the Oklahoma Sooners, who lost their season opener to the BYU Cougars by a score of 14 to 13. Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Sam Bradford left the game at the end of the first half after being drilled to the turf by BYU’s Coleby Clawson. Bradford suffered a sprained shoulder and did not return to the game.

Bradford spent the second half on the sideline with his right arm in a sling and ice taped to his shoulder. Backup quarterback Landry Jones took the snaps for the Sooners.

The shoulder injury sustained by Bradford was described as an “AC joint sprain” on his throwing shoulder. On the play before he got injured, Bradford broke the school’s passing record after completing an 18-yard pass to Brandon Caleb; Bradford now has 7,937 career passing yards.

Bradford left the game completing 10 of 14 passes for 96 yards, throwing one touchdown strike to Ryan Broyles in the first quarter. Landry Jones was 6-of-12 passing for 51 yards.

BYU’s Max Hall was 26-for-38 for 329 yards, throwing two touchdown strikes: one to Andrew George, and the other to McKay Jacobson. Jacobson scored the touchdown with 3:03 left in the 4th quarter to give the Cougars a 14-13 lead.

Oklahoma kicker Tress Way had a chance to win the game for the Sooners, but his 54-yard field goal attempt fell short.
