Usain Bolt Shatters Own World Record
Usain Bolt not only broke his own World Record at the 100 meters; he shattered it.
Bolt, who had already ran the 100 meters in 9.69 seconds in Beijing, ran the same distance in 9.58 seconds at the world championships in Berlin…and yes Bolt waited until the end of the race to actually celebrate. Tyson Gay broke the American record with a time of 9.71 seconds.
The 0.11 second improvement was the biggest improvement in the 100-meter record since 1968, when electronic timing commenced.
“I don’t run for world records,” said Bolt, whose only competition these days is the clock. Bolt thinks he can break the record again.
“I know I said 9.4. You never know. I’ll just keep on working.”
Bolt’s fellow countryman, Asafa Powell, finished in third place with a time of 9.84 seconds. Both Jamaican runners did a victory lap.
After the race, Tyson Gay said, “I’ve been telling you someone could run 9.5. I’m happy he did it, it showed a human can take it to another level. Unfortunately, I wasn’t the one to do it, but I still have confidence I can do it one day.”
