Memphis to Vacate 38-Win Season

The Memphis Tigers will be forced to vacate their NCAA-record 38 wins from the 2007-2008 season under former coach John Calipari. In addition, the Tigers will serve three years’ probation due to violations of NCAA rules.

Back in May, the NCAA accused Memphis of several infractions under Calipari. This includes a counterfeit SAT score by Derrick Rose (which was never really proven) as well as providing $1,700 in free travel to Derrick’s brother Reggie. Nevertheless, once the SAT score was invalidated by Educational Testing Service, Rose was ineligible to play college basketball.

“This is a situation of strict liability,” said Paul Dee, chairman for the NCAA Committee on Infractions. “If he is ineligible and does not meet initial requirements, the penalties are related back to that time and a determination is then made: Did he play in any contests after the fact? In this case, he did.”

Calipari now becomes the first head coach to have vacated Final Four appearances with two different colleges. He was also the coach of the 1996 Massachusetts basketball team. In both cases, Calipari was not penalized.
