2009 Aflac All-American Game Ends in Tie
The 2009 Aflac All-American High School Baseball Classic was a game where the talent was so evenly matched the game had to end in a tie.
Down 3-2 in the bottom of the 9th inning, Rancho Buena Vista High School (CA) shortstop Tony Wolters hit a triple down the right field line to level the score at three, sending the game into extra innings in front of a crowd of 8,027 at Petco Park.
Due to pre-determined game rules, the game would end after ten innings. In the 10th inning, both teams managed to load the bases with one out, and both were able to put one run on the scoreboard. The game eventually ended in a 4-4 tie.
The West took a 2-0 lead when two runners scored on a wild pitch and an error on the same play.
Tony Wolters earned the Aflac All-American MVP Title; he went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a stolen base.
The West led 2-1 after seven innings, but Jacoby Jones from Richton High School (MO) drove in Trey Griffin from Martin Luther King Jr. High School (GA) to level the score at 2. Michael Arencibia of Key West High School (FL) scored the go-ahead run after a wild pitch to give the East a 3-2 lead.
Matt Lipka from McKinney High School (TX) walked in the bottom of the 9th off Yordy Cabrera from Lakeland High School (FL), setting up Wolters’ RBI triple. Wolters may have had a walk-off inside-the-park home run had he not stumbled while running the bases.
Prior to the game, Yordy Cabrera won the Home Run Derby title by hitting five tape-measure shots in the final round.
Each team in the East vs. West series has won three of seven games.
