Stewart Cink Wins British Open
Tom Watson failed to convert on an eight-foot putt on the 72nd hole of the British Open. Instead of becoming golf’s oldest major champion, he had to go through a playoff with Stewart Cink; Cink ended up victorious after four holes.
This victory was the first major title for Stewart Cink, but this title will most likely be remembered as the title that Tom Watson choked away with a historic victory within reach.
When Watson bogeyed the 72nd hole, he found himself tied with Cink at 2-under 278. He fell apart in the playoffs after bogeying the first playoff hole and double-bogeying the third. Cink would win the four-hole playoff by six strokes.
Lee Westwood and Chris Wood were the only other golfers who finished under par; both finished tied for 3rd at 1-under 279. Luke Donald, Mathew Goggin, and Retief Goosen finished at Even.
Tiger Woods never played the last two rounds as he missed the cut after the second round.
