Felipe Massa in Satisfactory Condition
On Monday, two days after his life-threatening crash at the Hungarian Grand Prix, Felipe Massa was awake and talking to his family. He is making significant improvement and is in satisfactory condition.
Chief Surgeon Lajos Zsiros said that Massa is breathing unassisted and moving his limbs, but is still feeling groggy. Massa sustained multiple skull fractures in the accident and experienced brain swelling.
Massa will not return to a racetrack this season; in fact, he might not be racing in the future anymore.
“I don’t know [if he can return],” said Dr. Robert Veres, who was one of the three doctors who performed the surgery on Massa. “It’s too early to say anything concerning his future.” Massa had several fragments of bone from his skull removed during the operation, but doctors are more concerned about injuries to his left eye. “[We don't] know the quality of this damage,” said Veres.
Anna Rafaela, Felipe’s wife, is six months pregnant with their first child. She doesn’t think that her husband will have any long-term physical injuries and hopes he can return to the track. Rafaela said, “He is doing good. Soon he will be giving joy to all in his little red car on the speedway.”
Ferrari president Luca di Montezemelo placed Massa’s health as the team’s top priority.
“Felipe’s been an important member of the Ferrari family for many years, since he arrived as a kid. We all hope that he can come back soon,” said Di Montezemelo. “[Team principal Stefano] Domenicali has to think and make good proposals for the future. We don’t want to wait too long for Felipe. First priority now is to find out about Felipe, only at that moment will we take a decision.”
F1 will investigate the accident as well as address the death of Henry Surtees, an F2 driver who died after getting struck in the head by a loose tire that flew off another car.
