Edmonton Eskimos 19 Winnipeg Blue Bombers 17
Ricky Ray completed 29 of 41 passes for 318 yards, throwing one touchdown pass to Andrew Nowacki; Ray also scored a touchdown on the ground.
However, the win came at a cost for Edmonton as running back Jesse Lumsden was injured at the end of the first quarter after taking a hit from Siddeeq Shabazz; Lumsden was taken to the hospital for X-rays on his left shoulder.
Eskimos coach Richie Hall, who won his first game as a coach, said, “My heart goes out to him. There’s a lot of life in Jesse. We don’t know the extent of his injury right now. I know he is disappointed. I saw his reaction at half-time, he was very frustrated when he came off the field. It’s a tough time for him right now. He’s very disappointed. He’s doing the best under the circumstances.”
Winnipeg trailed 19 to 16 late in regulation, but Alexis Serna couldn’t convert on a 56-yard field goal that would have sent the game to overtime.
Winnipeg’s Stefan LeFors was 14-for-31 for 174 yards. After the game, LeFors said, “To come that close at the end and to have a chance to send it to overtime and then not being able to, that’s tough to swallow. In the first half I think we killed ourselves by putting too much pressure on our defence but they did a great job holding them down and keeping us in it. Too many stalled drives. That’s not going to cut it.”
