Chris Smith, a pro golfer in the PGA Tour, said that he is in shock after an auto accident over the weekend that killed his wife, Beth, and critically injured his two children.

Beth, 42, was a passenger in an SUV when the car hit a Greyhound bus carrying members of a Canadian football team, the London Silverbacks. The bus caught on fire and more than 20 of the football players were hurt. The accident happened around 11:35 am on Sunday near a northern Indiana community.

The Smith children, Abigail, age 16, and Cameron, age 12, were declared in critical condition on Monday at a Fort Wayne hospital. Because of privacy laws, no further information will be released about the children.

Sunday’s crash is being investigated further. Authorities say that Abigail Smith was driving the SUV when it veered across the median at Interstate 69.

In a statement, Chris Smith said, “Words cannot begin to express how difficult of a time this is for our family and we appreciate the generous outpouring of support that we have received. We would appreciate it if you would continue to keep our family in your thoughts and prayers, and kindly ask that you please respect our privacy during this extremely difficult time.”

Chris Smith, 40, won the 2002 Buick Classic, and the Ohio Open in 1992 and 1994. He also has five Nationwide Tour wins: two in 1995, and three in 1997.

  1. My prayers are with the family. Although I can’t fathom to wonder…why is there a Canadian football team in Northern Indiana in the first place?

  2. The Canadian football team was probably either traveling to a game or something in the US. Or they were driving back home from a game they played here.
