MLB Recap: June 22
New York Mets 6 St. Louis Cardinals 4- Tim Redding allowed four earned runs on just five hits in seven innings as he won his first game as a starting pitcher. The Mets, behind a Daniel Murphy long ball and a 4-for-4 day from Omir Santos, improved their record to 35-33 with the victory. St. Louis’ Todd Wellemeyer allowed five earned runs on ten hits in 5.2 innings of work on the mound; he was issued his 7th loss of the year.
Atlanta Braves 2 Chicago Cubs 0- Javier Vazquez had little run support thus far as a starting pitcher for the Atlanta Braves. Luckily, he didn’t need much as the Braves only needed two runs to win their 33rd game of the season. Vazquez pitched 6.2 innings of scoreless baseball, allowing nine hits and striking out five; he improved to 5-6 as a starter. Nate McLouth was involved in both runs for Atlanta; his RBI single in the 3rd inning drove in the first run of the game, and he scored the other run on a Chipper Jones sacrifice fly.
Colorado Rockies 11 Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim 1- Brad Hawpe’s 30th birthday celebration will be remembered for a while as his three-run blast in the 5th inning propelled the Rockies to their 17th win in their last 18 games. With this victory, Colorado has now won a franchise record 9th consecutive game on the road. Seth Smith also hit a long ball for the Rockies. The Angels’ lone run of the game came off the bat of Kendry Morales, who hit his 12th home run of the year in the 4th inning.
Oakland Athletics 5 San Francisco Giants 1- Having been swept by their Bay Area rival, the Oakland Athletics got their new series off to a good start. With a 5-1 victory over the Giants, the Athletics improved to 31-38 on the year. Bobby Crosby drove in three runs for Oakland, who had just scored as many runs in their previous series with San Francisco. The Giants scored their only run of the game when Travis Ishikawa hit his 4th home run of the year in the 2nd inning.
