Breaking News: Lucas Glover Wins 109th U.S. Open

In what has already been one of the most surprising golf seasons in recent memory, the field has just gotten even more confusing.  Lucas Glover, a man who never made the cut at the U.S. Open in three other appearances, has won the 109th annual tournament.  Glover closed off his first major victory with a par on the Par-4 18th, giving him the win at 4-under par.

Glover fought off crowd-favorite Phil Mickelson, who’s wife was recently diagnosed with breast cancer, in the final few holes.  Mickelson finished at 2-under.  Alongside them stood Ricky Barnes, who had set a record for lowest score through 36 holes earlier in the week (-8).  He himself would finish at 2-under par, as did former number one player in the world David Duval.

Tiger Woods, who entered the day at 1-over par, managed to bring himself down a stroke, finishing at even par.  He had been searching to repeat as champion.

Glover becomes only the second American to win the tournament since 2003, along with the aforementioned Woods.

This year’s U.S. Open had been overshadowed by the gigantic amounts of rain received in the Bethpage area, which is about 25 miles from Manhattan.  USGA director Mike Davis did a spectacular job of keeping great course conditions, allowing for the first Monday finish since 1983.

We will have more coverage as the day goes on.
