Professional golfer Phil Mickelson said that he will suspend his PGA Tour schedule indefinitely. His wife, Amy, has been diagnosed with breast cancer.
According to Phil’s management company, Amy is supposed to have more tests soon, but will begin treatment with a major surgery within the next two weeks. A former Phoenix Suns cheerleader, Amy is always at Phil’s side supporting him.
Phil, ranked second in the world, was to face Byron Nelson this week in the Championship.
After being informed of what had happened, Tiger Woods stated, “Elin and I are deeply saddened to hear the news about Amy. Our thoughts and prayers are with her, Phil, the children, and the entire Mickelson family.”
“Every time I’ve been around her, she’s always had a smile on her face. She’s always upbeat. She’s a neat girl. Hopefully, it’s early and hopefully, they take care of it. I just sent Phil a text back. I didn’t call him or anything. He’ll call me if he needs anything,” said Scott Verplank, who played on two Ryder Cup teams and two Presidents Cup teams with Phil.
Phil and Amy were married in 1996 and have three children: Amanda (9), Sophia (7), and Evan (6).
Sarah Strange, a breast cancer survivor and wife of former Ryder Cup captain Curtis Strange, says that “Amy Mickelson’s outgoing personality would play a big part in her recovery. She’s such an upbeat person, and I think she’ll approach this in the same way, moving forward with confidence…She was so supportive of me being a captain’s wife. In return, she will feel that support from others.”
