A Story We Can All Rally Around

As sports fans, we all have a duty to defend our team at all costs. We cheer when our linebackers sack the QB, our closers strikeout the side, and even when our team wins a shootout in the NHL Playoffs. However, there are some times when we put aside our partisan views and come together over an emotionally gut wrenching tale. This is one of those.

Meet Mark Herzlich- the ACC Defensive Player of the year who has decided to come back for his senior season at Boston College. His plans for the upcoming year were very simple: win a national championship and secure a top ten selection in the NFL Draft. As of last week however, his plans now include beating Ewing’s Sarcome- the type of cancer he was just diagnosed with.

See next year for Mark, instead of working out in the gym everyday, he’ll be at the hospital going for chemo. In order to build up his strength he would have done endurance drills or 40 yard dashes. To build up his strength to fight off the cancer though he will just sleep in order to conserve energy. While this may be devastating for anyone who has been diagnosed, just imagine the position Herzlich is now in. Instead of being on a one year job interview for his future employers, Mark will have to watch from sidelines as he battles for his life while B.C battles for the crown.

The good news for Mark though is that his form of cancer does have a 80% survival rate so hopefully he will be back on his feet soon playing for a NFL team near you in the couple of years. Godspeed Sir, we all wish you the best
