Boston University Wins Frozen Four Championship
With just over one minute left in regulation of the Frozen Four championship game, the University of Miami (OH) was up by two goals. Having a grand total of zero national championships in any sport, Miami was on their way to winning their first, right?
Wrong! Two goals by Boston University in the last minute of the game sent the game into overtime, where the Terriers of Boston won on perhaps the craziest championship-winning goal in Frozen Four history.
Chris Connolly scored the first goal of the game for Boston 15:15 into the first period. However, Miami’s Gary Steffes netted the equalizer early in the second period to tie the game at one.
Tommy Wingels and Trent Vogelhuber scored for Miami to put the RedHawks up by a score of 3 to 1 with just four minutes left in the third period. With 3:32 left in the third period, Boston goalie Kieran Millan was pulled from the net for an extra attacker. Good idea?
Indeed! Zach Cohen scored with 59.5 seconds remaining to pull the Terriers to within one goal. Then, Nick Bonino, who assisted on Cohen’s goal, scored the game-tying goal with 17.4 seconds left to tie the game at 3 and send the game to overtime. Prior to this year’s Frozen Four tournament, there had not been an overtime in the championship game since 2002 when the Minnesota Golden Gophers defeated Maine by a score of 4 to 3.
In the overtime of this year’s game, however, Colby Cohen became the hero for Boston University as his shot ricocheted off a RedHawk before finding the net.
“I saw it go in, and that was it. I don’t remember anything after that,” said Cohen, who was selected as the Frozen Four’s most outstanding player. “It’s an unbelievable feeling.”
