In an effort to reshape the Toronto Maple Leafs, GM Brian Burke has made a deal with the Tampa Bay Lightning. In this deal, Tampa Bay would send Olaf Kolzig, Jamie Heward, defense prospect Andy Rogers, and a 2009 fourth-round pick to Ontario. In exchange, minor-league defenseman Richard Petiot will be shipped to Florida.
However, do not expect Kolzig nor Heward to physically suit up in a Leafs uniform during the remainder of the season. Kolzig is nursing a ruptured bicep tendon in his left arm, and Heward is still recovering from his New Year’s collision with Alexander Ovechkin. Both veteran players will be unrestricted free agents on July 1 of this year.
