Hamels to have elbow examined

While his arm was spared the wear and tear of the WBC, Cole Hamels might be in injury trouble even before the season starts. While he did not complain of any injury during his two starts so far this spring, the southpaw complained of tightness in his elbow earlier on Tuesday and will visit with Phillies team doctor as a precaution.

In an interview late Tuesday, Hamels was quoted as saying “There are 20 days to opening day. My body and my shoulder are pretty much ready, It’s just trying to get that mild discomfort out. This will obviously set me back a couple of days, and I don’t think that should be a big deal.”

Hamels, the ace for the reigning World Series Champs in Philadelphia, ia coming off a stellar season which he capped off with one of the best postseason performances by a starter in MLB history.  The Phillies would undoubtedly miss him in their rotation, as his injury would not only put him out of the lineup, but would also force the Phillies to perhaps bring up an AAA starter who might not be fully ready for the majors.  Hamels was certain who he wanted to replace him if he couldn’t go on Opening Day, saying “Brett Myers, no doubt”.

The Phillies open play at home against the Atlanta Braves on April 5th.  The Braves have been tearing up the Grapefruit League, currently holding a 14-3 record and sitting at the top of the standings.
