Bay and Red Sox Not Close to Extension
SFC has learned that The Boston Red Sox and OF Jason Bay are still very far apart on a potential contract extension.
Bay, who was acquired from the Pittsburgh Pirates in the Manny Ramirez trade last July, has said that he would like to stay in Boston. However, he thinks he would be selling himself short if he didn’t test the free agent waters. It is extremely likely Bay will get a good contract, as he and Matt Holiday are the only two legitimate power threats who will be free agents after the ‘09 season.
Bay is a clubhouse and fan favorite in Boston. He runs the bases hard, hits for power, and is overall just a great baseball player. He will certainly be one of the biggest prizes in the off-season. Last year, Bay hit 31 homers and 101 RBI with Pittsburgh and Boston combined. It was thought that the Red Sox and Bay were close to a deal but today the news broke that the sides just feel as if a deal can not be completed at this time.
