Yankees Offer Burnett Contract

by Matt Cote on Tuesday, November 18th, 2008

The Bronx Bombers are at it again. SFC has just learned that the New York Yankees have offered free agent RHP A.J. Burnett a 5-year, $80 million contract. Burnett, who played for the Yankees’ AL East rival Toronto last year, compiled a an 18-10 record and had an AL-leading 231 strikeouts. This offer comes only 5 days after the Yankees offered CC Sabathia the largest contract ever for a pitcher. Other teams in the hunt for Burnett’s services are the Red Sox, Orioles, Blue Jays, and Angels.

I hope the Yankees get CC or Burnettt… In your opinion, what are the chances of either of these players going to the Yankees?

  2. Matt Black says:

Well Natesh i honestly think that CC will end up in pinstripes. though he has clearly stated he would like to remain in the NL and on the West Coast where he is from. I don’t see how he turns this deal down so i say about an 90% chance CC goes to the Yanks. Burnett i am not as sure, he has family in Baltimore and has been contacted by the Orioles. The Blue Jays desperetley want him back but idk if they will be to give him the money. Don’t count the Red Sox out of the Burnett sweepstakes either. I say chances AJ is a Yankee will be about 45%. I would be surprised if they sign both,

  3. Mike Cosentino says:

Yea the Blue Jays aren’t offering that type of money, they were hoping for a 4 year deal for $54 mil but the Yankees obviously trump that

  4. Carmine Caruso says:

I hope the Sox sign Burnett. Its more important than getting Teixera I think, for sure. Not only could we use another big pitcher, we also dont want the Yankees to go from having a ho-hum rotation to having one of the best rotations in the mlb. If we sign Burnett, and also get that Lugo for Willis trade with Detroit, this would be the projected starting rotation:
    1. Beckett
    2. Burnett
    3. Lester
    4. Matsuzaka
    5. Willis
Thats an outstanding rotation, and with the money we dont have to pay Manny, we can definately afford to give Burnett a good chunk of it.

  5. Matt Black says:

Good point Carmine however I think getting Mark Teixeira is the top priority. The Red Sox showed a weaknes sin October when they couldn’t get a big hit, another bat would solidify and already outstanding team.

  6. Carmine Caruso says:

Pitching wins championships. If they do this they have 4 great pitchers and thats good because in the Game 4 of the ALCS, instead of Wake who allows 100000000 runs, you have Dice K. I think with Lowell back the hitting is fine, Lowell was the World Series MVP and obviously is a clutch post-season hitter.

  7. Matt Black says:

Still not as good as Tex will be. The pitching is fine now, its the offense we need.
