by Derek Johnson on Tuesday, November 11th, 2008

Three Washington goals plus Alexander Ovechkin’s first goal in almost a month equals a 4-2 victory over former Capital Olaf Kolzig’s team.

Tom Poti, Mike Green, and Eric Fehr scored in the first period to put the Capitals ahead by a score of 3 to 0 after the first period.

In the second period, Gary Roberts scored on a power play goal to bring the Lightning to within two goals. However, Alexander Ovechkin, for the first time in 10 games, scored a goal. Ovechkin’s goal gave the Capitals their three-goal lead back. Roberts would add another power play goal with 26 seconds left in the game.

Capitals goalie Brent Johnson made 34 saves on 36 Tampa shots while Kolzig stopped 26 of 30 Washington shots.

The crowd of 17,932 at Verizon Center gave a warm welcome to “Olie the Goalie,” who spent 16 seasons between the pipes for the Washington Capitals. However, Kolzig signed with the Lightning as a free agent after being demoted to backup when Cristobal Huet (now with the Blackhawks) came to Washington from Montreal.
