Tampa Bay Rays 4 Boston Red Sox 2
The Tampa Bay Rays and Boston Red Sox played a 14-inning game of baseball on Wednesday night in front of 38,114 people at Fenway Park. In the 14th inning of that game, Carlos Peña hit a three-run home run to lift his Rays over the Red Sox by a final score of 4 to 2. The Rays not only earned their first series win in Boston since 1999, but also increased their lead in the American League East to 2.5 games over Boston. Tampa Bay has won five of their last six games against the Red Sox.
Neither team had scored since the 3rd inning nor could they bat well with runners in scoring position. This resulted in numerous men being left on base.
Akinori Iwamura and Rocco Baldelli hit back-to-back singles with two outs in the top of the 14th inning off Mike Timlin. Then, Peña hit a 1-0 pitch over the Green Monster in left field to give him his 28th home run of the season. The Red Sox could have come back as they managed to load the bases in the bottom of the 14th inning. However, they mustered just one run on a Kevin Youkilis sacrifice fly.
