Rudi Johnson in Detroit

Rudi Johnson had been released by the Cincinnati Bengals, but will still be playing football this season. The 28-year old from Petersburg, Virginia reached a one-year agreement with the Detroit Lions.

After flying to Detroit, Rudi Johnson impressed the Lions with his workout and conditioning. There was even a buzz in the Lions’ locker room among players who witnessed Johnson’s workout.

Even though Johnson had one of his best offseasons training-wise, he missed a lot of training camp due to a hamstring injury.

What does this mean for Tatum Bell? He already lost his starting job to rookie Kevin Smith, so he was released on Tuesday to make room for Johnson on the roster.

The 5′10″, 225-pound Johnson rushed for 5,742 yards in seven seasons with Cincinnati. Even though Smith is expected to start for the Lions, Johnson will compete for the job once he learns the Lions offense. The Lions plan to run the ball a lot this season, so they shouldn’t have any problems with a two-back system.
