Gus Frerotte to Start for Minnesota
The Minnesota Vikings, after losing to Green Bay in Week 1 and Indianapolis in Week 2 by a combined score of 42 to 34, have decided to turn to veteran Gus Frerotte to get out of this 0-2 hole.
Vikings coach Brad Childress had much faith in QB Tarvaris Jackson heading into the season. However, on Wednesday, Childress announced Frerotte to be the starter for the rest of the season.
Childress said, “I’m just not seeing right now the aggressiveness from Tarvaris that I saw throughout the offseason, training camp, the two preseason games that he played in. And part of it may be experience. I know Gus will give us that. And I know his approach will also lend itself to that.”
Last season, Tarvaris Jackson was 8-4 as a starter, completing 58.2% of his passes, but this quarterback rating was just 70.8. This season, Jackson completed just 30 of 59 passes for 308 yards in two games. Even though the Vikings have a strong running back in the name of Adrian Peterson, their offense is ranked 24th in the league in passing.
The 37-year old Gus Frerotte, perhaps most known for his “Redskin Ram” in a game against the New York Giants, is in his 15th season in the NFL, having spent the last two as a backup in St. Louis.
