Cuban athlete banned for life
It was pretty clear Angel Matos did not like the result of his match.
In the bronze medal match for over-80kg men’s Taekwondo, Matos was disqualified in his match against Arman Chilmanov of Kazakhstan. Matos was ahead in this match before being knocked to the ground. Matos was waiting for medical attention for an apparent broken toe in his left foot. Instead, he got a disqualification from the judges for taking too much injury time. Fighters are allowed to take 1 minute but Matos went over this limit.
Matos argued with the judges with this call and became violent by pushing the judges and even kicking the referee. Matos would then spit on the floor before getting escorted out of the stadium.
Matos’ coach, Leudis Gonzalez had some strong words about the call as well. Saying that the judges were too strict and that the match was fixed claiming Kazakhstan paid off the judges. Gonzalez also said not to expect an apology from Matos for his actions.
Effective immediately, Matos and Gonzalez are banned from World Taekwondo Federation for life and the records will not show that Matos was present at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Matos won the gold in this event at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, Austrailia but finished 11th in 2004 at Athens, Greece.
Now Matos and Gonzalez have plenty of time on their hands, to find new careers.

Wow that’s crazy. One of the best athletes banned. But I don’t get why the coach would say the match was fixed anyways.
