Saints add shock with signing of Shockey

Jeremy Shockey, of the defending Super Bowl champion New York Giants, is headed to a “New” city: New Orleans. The Saints have received Shockey from New York in exchange for a second and fifth-round draft pick in 2009.

Last season with the Giants, the 27-year old tight end from Ada, Oklahoma caught 57 passes for 619 yards and three touchdowns.

New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton had wanted to acquire this coveted tight end since February. He had initially offered a second-round draft pick and then increased it to a second and a fifth-round draft pick when the Giants felt like Shockey was too valuable of a player to lose.

Shockey, a four-time Pro Bowler, has caught 371 passes for 4,228 yards and 59 touchdowns during his six years with the New York Giants, but wanted to get involved in some downfield passing as opposed to simply run blocking.

The two of them had worked together before when Shockey was a rookie; Payton was an offensive coordinator at the time.

What do you guys think about this trade? Was it worth it for both sides?
