Obviously, every sport fan has heard that former Cleveland Indians pitcher CC Sabathia had been traded to the Milwaukee Brewers. Late last night, the Brewers traded away minor leaguer Matt LaPorta, LHP Zach Jackson, RHP Rob Bryson, and a player to be named later all for reigning A.L. Cy Young winner CC Sabathia.
This trade has obvious immediate affects on not only the Indians and Brewers, but their respective leagues, and pretty much all of baseball. The Brewers have staked it all for a postseason run and an obvious World Series run. It will be hard for the Brewers to hold on to Sabathia after this year, as he will be a free agent and will probably sign somewhere else. However, for now, the Brewers have only one thing on mind, a World Series trophy.
Sabathia joins other ace, Ben Sheets in the starting rotation, whom is also a free agent to be next year, and it will obviously be hard for the Brewers to hold onto both of these starting pitchers. Sabathia’s numbers this year with the Indians are pretty good, but not nearly as good as his numbers last year. He is 6-8 this year with a 3.38 ERA, 123 strike outs, 52 walks, in 122 1/3 innings of work. His ERA is pretty low and it should be even lower in the NL. It also helps that Sabathia is a pretty good batter, so that is only a plus for the Brewers. Last year, Sabathia went 19-7 with a 3.21 ERA.
The Brewers look to take on the Houston Astros and St. Louis Cardinals for the pennant or try and go for the wild card. Milwaukee is 49-40 and 4 games back out of first at this time, and they are only half a game out of the wild card lead. The Indians were never really in the hunt this season, but the rest of the division and the A.L. don’t have to worry about facing ace Cliff Lee and Sabathia in a series, so the division is probably happy about this trade.
The Brewers risked the future of the club by dealing away top prospect Matt LaPorta. If the Brewers, by some chance, don’t make the playoffs, it will be a BIG disappointment for the fans and the franchise. As soon as this season is over, I believe nearly any team will be in the running for Sabathia, but only a few teams will be able to afford him. This means, the Yankees, Red Sox, Mets, Angels, and whatever other teams can afford him will probably be in the running. Sabathia will be turning 28 soon and he is looking for a multi year contract, possibly around 4.
