Breaking News: Ivan Rodriguez Traded to Yankees

The New York Yankees have just dealt right-handed relief pitcher Kyle Farnsworth back to his old team, the Detroit Tigers, for catcher Ivan Rodriguez.

The Yankees were in need of a catcher because Jorge Posada had already undergone season-ending surgery.

Ivan Rodriguez (also known as “Pudge”) was in the final year of his contract and decided to waive his no-trade clause to join the Yankees.

After the Yankees’ 13-3 victory over the Orioles on Wednesday, Yankees manager Joe Girardi said, “He’s hitting over .290 I believe and he’s been hot so we’re looking forward to having him.”

So now the Yankees need to decide who is going to be the 8th inning guy: Edwar Ramirez, Jose Veras, or Damaso Marte? The Yankees were using Jose Molina as catcher right now. Jose Molina is one of the best defensive catchers in the league, throwing out base stealers at 48%, most in the majors, and he works great with the pitching staff.

But he isn’t a good offensive player. Pudge now has to figure out how to work with this pitching staff and fast. This trade adds depth to the Yankees lineup and strength to the Tigers bullpen. Another move by the Yankees, a day before the deadline.
